Melbury Beacon near Shaftesbury in Dorset, is a favourite subject of mine. In this painting I have sought out the rhythms of shape and pattern in the landscape and from a sketch ‘on site’, I have created a semi abstract composition in oil back in the studio. I have used bright colours in the foreground to lift and unify the design.

Cley Hill - ‘Circles’

Swirling hills and hillforts often feature as subject matter in my work. Cley Hill near Warminster is a hillfort with some rather interesting “happenings” during the summer when the wheat fields are full and ready for harvesting. Locals know them as ‘crop circles’. Someone - we know not who - has fun making shapes and patterns in the corn, so I thought I would do the same!

Acrylic

Recently when driving down from Salisbury plain in Wiltshire towards Mere, I have noticed that the fields wear a late summer look now; some already harvested, some turning a tired green, others empty of their crop showing the dry underbelly of the once waving corn. Summer  is moving on. You may also find a nod to Autumn in this painting.

Conte crayon

h: 30 w: 25 d: 1 (cms).

This portrait of Bella was done during Lockdown, when Dulwich Art Group were holding portrait / life drawing sessions on Zoom from their studio in London every Saturday morning from 10 to 1. The good thing about this was that even though we were drawing remotely and online, we were drawing ‘in real time’  rather than from a photographic image and there were artists working in the studio along with us.
